Professor Peter Shah has a lifelong interest in education and has been inspired by generations of excellent teachers. He believes that education and mentoring are the foundation of excellent work in any endeavour
Glaucoma
I run regular Glaucoma Masterclasses and Glaucoma Surgery Masterclasses. Together with Professor Graham Lee in Brisbane, Australia we developed the first wet-lab model for glaucoma surgery. I passionately believe that trainee surgeons should demonstrate advanced surgical competency in the wet -lab before they are allowed to operate on patients in the operating theatre.
Professor Graham Lee and myself have created hundreds of hours of educational material, including a Phacoemulsification Cataract Course on the International Ophthalmology Portal, a link to which can be found in the Research Section.
I am a world expert in Glaucoma Litigation and Patient Safety, and have lectured extensively around the world over the past 20 years on these subjects.
Our courses and educational materials are consistently evaluated as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ by the majority of our delegates.
Ocular Surface Disease
The clinical fields of glaucoma and ocular surface disease are closely linked. Together with colleagues I set up and developed the first National Ocular Surface Masterclasses. Careful management of the ocular surface is essential for the success of glaucoma surgery and underpins long term management of patients with glaucoma.
I believe in a holistic approach to the management of the ocular surface, encompassing areas as diverse as:
Dry Eye Disease
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
Atopic Eye Disease
Systemic diseases

These courses aim to ensure that young specialists have a full range of clinical, administrative and managerial skills when they start their new positions.
Topics covered include:
Avoiding isolation
Optimising patient safety
Avoiding complaints
Job planning
Conflict and communication skills
