I believe in bringing together clinical excellence, education and research to optimise the delivery of compassionate, safe and effective healthcare. I have been involved in delivering Supra-regional Complex Glaucoma care as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon since 1999, and have trained over 35 national and international Glaucoma Clinical and Research Fellows. I set up and Co-Direct the Birmingham Institute for Glaucoma Research with Mr. Imran Masood, through the Institute of Translational Medicine in Birmingham.
Together with my research team, I have published over 180 peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters, and have world-wide collaborative research links. We have helped to re-set international benchmarks for surgical outcomes in glaucoma filtration surgery.
I have co-authored 7 textbooks, including the ‘ABC of Eyes’ and am currently proof-reading my latest book – ‘Becoming an Effective Mentor – How and Why?’
I have worked on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Education Committee and have served as Lead for: a) New Consultants and b) Undergraduate and Foundation Doctor Curriculum development. I developed and ran the first RCOphth Glaucoma Sub-Speciality Days at the Annual Scientific Congress.
I have worked on the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress Council (previously as Honorary Secretary) since 2000 and have organised many educational symposia.
I believe passionately in education and have delivered over 200 national and international invited lectures.I am the Immediate Past-President of the national UK & Eire Glaucoma Society.
Private Practice
I have two private practice bases: The Edgbaston Eye Clinic in Edgbaston (Central Birmingham) and The Spire Eye Centre at Little Aston Hospital (North Birmingham). I have been in private practice for 20 years and specialise in:
Diagnosis and management of glaucoma.
Glaucoma laser surgery - including Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty and YAG Laser Peripheral Iridotomy.
Complex second and third opinions.
I look after patients from all over the UK and also from Africa, United States of America, Australia, New Zealand and mainland Europe. I enjoy being able to devote extensive time to sorting out complex problems that are referred to me by other Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons. I have worked very hard to minimise my complication rates for glaucoma laser procedures - with risk of serious visual loss of less than in 1 in 1000 cases.
I have also set up one of the first private “Joint Complex Surgical Clinics” with my colleague Mr. Imran Masood.
My philosophy of medicine is to arrive at a definitive diagnosis by taking a careful history and performing a meticulous clinical examination. The clinical assessment is enhanced by state-of-the-art ophthalmic investigations. The key to safe management of ophthalmic conditions such as glaucoma is to ensure the correct timing and sequence of interventions. I collaborate extensively with local, national and international colleagues to ensure that my patients get the best possible advice.
I continuously audit the outcomes of all of my interventions and my outcomes benchmark against the very best in the world.
Please direct any enquiries to my private secretary, Rochelle Evans (details below). Working hours 13:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday.
